What The Labor Shortage Means For You

If you’ve turned on the news lately most likely you’ve heard about the Great Resignation.  If you’ve driven down the street of any retail neighborhood or by any fast food restaurants you’ve surely seen numerous “Help Wanted” signs.  Especially during the quarantine period of 2020, many workers in America had time for self reflection, particularly about the types of jobs they’re working and their work schedules.

However, if you are on the hunt for a job, or you have been thinking about a different and perhaps better the labor shortage could create an opportunity for you.

A Plethora Of Open Positions

Job openings are high right now, and that’s across many sectors.  From teachers to healthcare workers, line cooks to manufacturing, employers need employees and they are going to great lengths to get them.  Restaurants for instance desperately need employees right now, and some will hire on the spot and offer never before seen hiring bonuses for positions like line cooks.  If you are looking for something with more flexibility for your schedule, part time, or remote work, these positions are also very plentiful right now.

Rising Wages

In order to attract more employees, businesses of all types are having to increase wages across the board for employees.  Many hourly positions are going for well over $15/hour.  If you’ve been looking for a change, now is also a great time to find something different to do.  Manufacturing companies are also looking for a larger workforce to keep up with high production demands, and many starting jobs will offer $18+ per hour, often with on the job training.  With remote work becoming more and more efficient for companies, many entry level positions can also be found with good wages and benefits such as health insurance that will kick in after shorter trial periods than before.  If you’re happy at your current job, now is a great time to request an increase in your pay also because your current company may be easily willing to give you an increase in wages versus risking losing you as an employee if you find a more attractive position elsewhere.

Work Life Balance

The combination of many open positions across multiple industries and employers having to offer better pay creates a unique opportunity to find a position that brings you more fulfillment.  You can use that to leverage more time for yourself outside of work, a position with a better culture, or an environment and paycheck that allows you to be happier at work.  The term “work life balance” couldn’t be more true right now because workers of all types are using this time to re-evaluate how work and life mesh together.  There are many opportunities out there right now, and if you’re looking for something new, the time couldn’t be better to leverage your talents or make a career change.  Be sure to visit the large job boards, or search the large search networks for the types of jobs you may want to seek in your area, and you’re sure to find some attractive options.
